About Medeltidsveckan
Running since 1984, Medieval Week is today one of Europe’s biggest historical festivals. For one week Visby – whose ring wall and Hanseatic quarters are UNESCO World Heritage – steps back into the 14th century: jousting tournaments, a harbour market, jesters in the lanes and tens of thousands of visitors in period dress.
What makes the week special is that the whole town plays along. Shops dress their windows medieval-style, restaurants serve period food, and many visitors sew their own costumes months ahead. The programme spans 800+ events, from academic lectures to fire shows at night.
