Delsbo: crater lakes, fiddlers and the road to the mountains

The lakes Delsbo sits beside are not ordinary lakes. The Dellen lakes were formed by a meteorite impact roughly 90 million years ago. The crater was about 19 km across, and the round shape of Northern Dellen is what remains of it today. Together, Northern and Southern Dellen cover some 130 square kilometres. The impact melted the bedrock into a rock of its own, dellenite, now the provincial rock of Hälsingland, and an asteroid, 7704 Dellen, is named after the lakes.

Music runs deep here. A fiddlers' gathering was held in Delsbo as early as 1908, partly at the initiative of Nathan Söderblom, to revive a folk music tradition that was losing ground. Since 1952, fiddlers and audiences have met every year on the first Sunday in July at Delsbo Forngård, the local open-air farmstead museum, and in summer 2027 Delsbostämman turns 75.

Delsbo is also known for its folk costume. The Delsbo costume, with patterned knitted sweaters, red skirt hems, the men's wedge caps and the women's black bonnets, stayed in everyday use longer than most costumes in the area: into the 1930s the skirt could still be worn on an ordinary day. Surviving garments are kept at, among other places, the Nordic Museum in Stockholm.

And then there is the road that gave the festival its name. National road 84 starts in Hudiksvall, runs straight through Delsbo and carries on via Ljusdal, Sveg and Funäsdalen to the Norwegian border, some 330 km in all, where it continues towards Røros. If you want to stretch the festival weekend into a few days in the mountains, you never have to change roads.
