About Almedalsveckan

Almedalen Week was born in 1968, when Olof Palme gave summer speeches from a truck bed in the Almedalen park in Visby. Out of those speeches grew perhaps the world’s most open democratic meeting place: a week of thousands of seminars by party leaders, agencies, companies and organisations – nearly all free and open to anyone.

What makes the week unique is the proximity: ministers, journalists and lobbyists share the same lanes, and conversations continue on the quay long after the seminars end.

During Almedalen Week, central Visby accommodation is effectively gone long in advance — organisations block-book entire houses, and nightly rates are the island’s highest.
